Annual General Meeting

VISION

The Society will promote the highest quality of end-of-life care by physicians in Canada.  

Mission

On behalf of its members the society will:

  • Advance the quality of life of the dying and their families.
  • Advance the field of palliative medicine.
  • Advance the interdisciplinary palliative care of patients and families.
  • Support the role of family physicians and other medical specialists in providing quality end-of-life care/palliative care through promotion of education and through advocacy.
  • Create a networking forum for palliative medicine physicians.
  • Promote and implement certification of physicians with special competence in palliative medicine.
  • Represent palliative medicine in Canada with local, provincial, national organizations.

GOALS

  1. Establish Palliative Medicine as a formalized academic discipline within each Canadian Faculty of Medicine.
  2. Establishment of a recognized certification process as a clinical discipline.
  3. Recognition of palliative medicine as a formalized field for study, support and practice.
  4. The establishment and monitoring of an appropriate human resource allocation plan in palliative medicine for Canadians.
  5. Development of an accreditation process for continuing education in palliative medicine
  6. Appropriate remuneration for palliative medicine resources in palliative care within Canada.
  7. The inclusion of Palliative Medicine in the training of medical students, primary care physicians, oncologists, internists, pediatricians, and other specialists as deemed appropriate.
  8. The promotion of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional palliative care research in Canada.

The Society is pledged to fulfill its Mission and advance its Goals through:

  1. Supporting the activities of Society committees and working groups in undergraduate education, postgraduate education, continuing education, certification and research.
  2. Serving as an advocate for the Palliative Medicine research community.
  3. Liaison with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and the College of Family Physicians.
  4. Liaison with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and with other organizations that share the Societies aims and objectives.
