On December 4, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas-Taylor, federal Minister of Health, tabled the Framework on Palliative Care in Canada in Parliament. The Framework resulted from passing of Bill C-277, An Act Providing for the Development of a Framework on Palliative Care in Canada one year ago. The Framework is the result of year-long national consultations with many stakeholders including the CSPCP. The process brought the subject of palliative care to the forefront of Canadian national politics and provided many opportunities for Canada’s leaders and stakeholders to be educated and to add their support.
Health Canada is planning the following next steps:
- Departmental officials will develop a Framework implementation plan, which will aim to action the guiding principles and goals reflected in the Framework.
- Health Canada will establish the Office of Palliative Care to provide high level coordination of palliative care activities going forward.
- They will continue to work with National Indigenous Organizations to explore the development of Indigenous-led engagement processes toward the development of a distinctions-based palliative care framework for Indigenous Peoples.
We look forward to seeing how the implementation unfolds and the CSPCP will continue to be an active partner. It is heartening to have federal politicians and Health Canada assist all of us with improving palliative care for all Canadians.
